What makes a good therapy practice name?

  • —Easy to say and spell. If you have to spell it out on the phone every time, it will cost you enquiries.
  • —Calm rather than clever. Puns and wordplay can feel flippant to someone in distress.
  • —Room to grow. 'Anxiety Help Leeds' is limiting if you later work with grief or couples.
  • —Honest about what you do. A name shouldn't imply services, titles or outcomes you don't offer.
  • —Distinctive locally. Search your town plus the name — if there's already a 'Willow Counselling' five miles away, keep looking.

The checks to run before you choose

Before you print anything or buy a domain, spend twenty minutes on due diligence. Search Companies House and the UK IPO trade mark register, check whether the .co.uk is available, search Google Maps for the name in your area, and check Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn handles. A name that fails one of these is usually not worth the fight.

From name to brand

Once you've chosen, the name becomes the anchor for everything else. Questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I use my own name for my therapy practice?

If you'll always practise alone, your own name is simple, personal and good for search, because people often look you up by name. A brand name makes more sense if you might add associates, rent rooms or sell the practice one day.

How do I check if a practice name is available in the UK?

Search Companies House for limited companies with the same or similar name, search the UK Intellectual Property Office trade mark register, check the .co.uk and .com domains, and look for the handle on the social platforms you'll use.

Can I call my practice a 'clinic' or use 'psychologist'?

'Clinical psychologist' and 'counselling psychologist' are protected titles in the UK — only use them if you're registered with the HCPC in that title. Words like 'clinic' and 'centre' aren't restricted, but they should honestly describe what you offer.

Do I need to register my practice name?

Sole traders don't have to register a trading name, though you must put your own name on invoices and correspondence. If you form a limited company, the company name is registered with Companies House.
